Originally a father and son partnership that began in 1975, Jack Carroll and Tim Carroll were in the business of purchasing used hospital beds, re-furbishing, and re-selling them to nursing homes. The company was then called Carroll Equipment.
In 1980 Carroll Equipment was ready to phase out the refurbishing business and start manufacturing new beds for the growing nursing home market. Years of refurbishing experience gave employees first-hand knowledge of competitive bed designs, parts prone to wear, and common mechanical problems. Carroll Equipment wanted to develop a bed with a simple, clean, and long-lasting design. The Echo bed (as it is known today) was launched, and the bed is still popular today.
The Echo bed allowed Carroll Equipment to secure key customers such as Thomasville Furniture Inc. and Extendicare Canada which grew the company to $2million in sales by 1993.
New owners Archie Leach and Don Roussy acquired the company in 1996 and renamed it Carroll Healthcare Inc.. Tim Carroll remained involved in Research & Development for many years to follow.
In 1997 Carroll Healthcare introduced SOLO, a specialized bed for dementia patients. The bed’s low-height became a true market innovation and lead to the attainment of Beverly Enterprise's entire bed business for 1998. Beverly was, and is, the world’s largest nursing home chain, and Beverly continues to make Carroll Healthcare its preferred bed supplier for its nursing homes.
In 2000 Carroll Healthcare introduced the lowest bed in North America – ARRO, which was designed to serve acute and sub-acute markets. Arro allowed the company to break into the hospital arena and establish a dedicated hospital sales force.
Invacare Corporation, the world leader in Home Care equipment, acquired Carroll Healthcare in 2003, adding the company to its long-term care division -Invacare Continuing Care Group. During the Invacare acquisition, original owners Archie Leach and Don Roussy choose to retain the hospital side of the Carroll Healthcare business, and established the new Carroll Hospital Group Inc. in May 2003.
Headquartered in London, Ontario Canada, Carroll Hospital Group services acute care markets in Canada, the United States, and the United
Kingdom. In 2003 the company launched the SpiritTM low bed for LTACH facilities, and just three years later introduced
the Spirit PlusTM bed;a low bed designed for med-surg units. New for 2008, Carroll Hospital Group launched the latest innovation in hospital beds -
Spirit SelectTM,a low bed equipped with an integrated scale and a 3-zone bed exit alarm. Carroll Hospital Group is changing the way hospitals address fall prevention, drawing from years of experience reducing patient falls in the sub-acute market. The company is focused heavily in Research & Development, and is dedicated to developing innovative
hospital beds that promote patient safety.
